Why dinosaurs are not extinct

In the twenty plus years I have been involved in paleontology I have been witness to a revolution within science. The revolution has been quiet, not noticed by most of the public. Like any good revolution, the battles of this revolution took place between two camps, the “traditionalists” and the “radicals” who were out to change things. And this shift is illustrative of how science as a whole moves from one way of understanding to a brand new way of looking at the world. It is, in fact, a paradigm shift that has profoundly changed biology and paleontology forever.

At issue is how we explore and classify the relationships of all living things. The traditional view, the one that I was taught as a young student, was the classification of living things into the taxonomy originally begun by Carl Linnaeus. This system started with a group, and then sought to put things into the group. For example, one can make the observation that animals that look like “dogs” could be grouped together, so you would start with the idea of a dog-group and look for animals that should be included.

You might put foxes, wolves, domestic dogs into the group, and call it the dog family. You might also note that “cats” could likewise be grouped, and do the same thing, creating a cat family. In this view, the families were equal in rank—and there could be no overlap. An animal would be included in only one of the equal-ranked families. Any animal was included in only one class, for example Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves, or Mammalia.

The equal-ranked heirarchy of classifications worked well enough when we mainly were concerned with modern animals. Clearly, birds look different than mammals and reptiles, so it seemed evident they belonged in their own class. But this classification scheme, however well it served us as a place to start, is myopic about how evolution actually operates—how organisms actually evolve. This is understandable since it was started 100 years before evolution as a theory was established.

In trying to shoehorn life into the system, we repeatedly ran into problems as we expanded our knowledge of the diversity of living things and our understanding that the history of life is a complex branching bush. We knew that early tetrapods (organisms with four limbs) gave rise to the early amphibians that crawled out on land, and that they in turn evolved into reptiles, mammals and birds. But despite this branching within tetrapods, the class ranks were forced to be exclusive, so somewhere in evolutionary history was an “amphibian” that had to become a “reptile,” and a “reptile” that had to become a “bird.”

The many transitional forms in the fossil record increasing became impossible to classify. These intermediate animals had to be forced into one class or another. Increasingly, it became evident that many times the criteria used to put an organism into one class were the whims of an individual scientist, and another equally qualified expert with different opinions might place the same animal in a different class with equal validity.

The origin of birds was for a long time a great mystery to paleontologists. Birds are a pretty unique and specialized group, and while we knew that they originated from reptiles somehow, exactly how and when was unclear. One early paleontologist noted that dinosaurs had many features in common with birds, but the early concepts of what dinosaurs were like distracted most scientists from comparing them too closely. After all, the common conception of dinosaurs was as big, lumbering, dim-witted, swamp-dwelling beasts. The bird ancestor must have been light, fast moving, and energetic.

However, dinosaur research over the last thirty years has completely changed our view of them. Evidence from many lines, including things like footprints and the cellular structure of the bones, all point to dinosaurs as being very dynamic creatures. With this new view, the notion that birds were linked to dinosaurs became clear too. Now, we have dinosaur fossils with feathers, and birds with teeth and dinosaur tails to attest to their close relationships. In fact, birds are most closely related to the meat-eating raptor-like dinosaurs of Jurassic Park fame.

To go along with the revolution in our view of dinosaurs was that revolution in science that I mentioned above–the emergence of a new way to understand the interrelationships of life on Earth. This new model accommodated the myriad branching events that life actually experienced in order to produce the great variety of living things. So, instead of starting with a conception of the group and looking for members, this new concept looked at the branching patterns evident in life, and then sought to apply names.

Below is an illustration of the branching pattern of selected tetrapods, those vertebrates with four well developed limbs. As the first tetrapods gave rise to new and different groups, the branches split off. An early tetrapod gave rise to amphibians and the other animals above it on the chart (mammals, turtles, etc.). A later tetrapod developed traits related to the production of eggs and young that we recognize as the Amniota. Some of those early amniotes went off on an evolutionary trajectory that we can recognize as being the early mammals, and all the diversity that resulted from them. And so it goes up along the branches.

We now explore the branches and can apply names to the groups that we find to be meaningful. For example, in the illustration below we can call everything in the box a reptile. Note that it includes things that used to be called reptiles, turtles, lizards, snakes, crocodiles, and dinosaurs, but now also includes birds.

Likewise, if we draw a line around the dinosaurs, they also include the birds. This view of life tells a more complete evolutionary history and retains the branches, letting the animals “fall where they will.” We do not pull birds out of their relationships and give them special consideration. Instead of birds being equal in rank with reptiles, they are included among them. This upsets the tradition that being a bird is somehow equally important to being a reptile, but better reflects the reality of descent, without forcing nature into earlier human conventions of naming and grouping. Of course, birds are a group within their own right, and we could zoom in to explore their branching pattern, but it does not change the group to which they belong.

This leads to another startling statement. Below I have highlighted the groups that are extant (still around today).

Because of our grouping scheme, birds are included in the dinosaur group, so dinosaurs are not really extinct! They live among us today flitting about, singing their mating songs in the trees. It is funny how things can change in science. Twenty years ago scientists would have told you the dinosaurs were all extinct, and today we say the opposite. I love scientific progress–it can be so startling.

Considerations for the best camping tents

There is something primal about camping—it helps connect us back to the natural world. In most of our everyday lives we are removed from the natural world. We sit in air conditioned offices typing on computers and talking on cell phones. The natural world goes on without our notice. But spending time outdoors, sleeping away from our homes and beds, helps bring us back down to ground (literally and figuratively).

However, having a nice tent can mean the difference between connecting to the natural world and becoming its victim. It is worth learning about the many features of a camping tent that you may want to consider when making a purchase. Tents range widely in price, and how much you spend can correlate highly with what you get in this case. Below are some features to know about.

Free-standing vs. not

A free-standing tent is one that will support itself. If you are camping in rocky areas, such as in the mountains, or in sandy areas, it can be difficult if not impossible to pound stakes into the ground or get them to stay. If the stakes are essential to making the tent stand up, you could be very frustrated. However, even free-standing tents should be staked out whenever possible. This allows the tent to be taut which maximizes its weather proof properties and keeps the tent from blowing away in winds.

Tents come in a variety of standard shapes, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. The simplest structure is a tarp. A tarp is a large sheet of material with many anchors for tying to, and it is tied to whatever in the area can be attached to; trees, mostly. A well set up tarp is extremely weather resistant, but having no floor and sides means that there is no protection against insects. Being eaten alive while you sleep is no fun. And if you are camping in an area without handy trees nearby, setting one up is a challenge.

The standard A-frame tent, or slight modifications on the A-frame style, can still be found. They often require being staked out in order to set up, and their high, broad sides mean they do not stand up well to winds. They work best in benign weather conditions and camping in your backyard.

Dome tents feature arched ceilings created by poles that crisscross the tent in one of several common configurations. They often have more ceiling height and the curved sides can usually withstand a bit more wind.

Tunnel-shaped tents remind me of something like a parking garage for you to sleep in. They are elongate, sometimes not much larger than your sleeping bag. Being low they can withstand wind, but often do not have much living and storage space. However, they are not always free-standing and may require staking.

Wedge shaped tents are modified tunnels. They slope such that they are higher on one end and low at the other. This gives more ceiling height which can add comfort, and they can be very wind resistant if set up with the low end facing the on-coming wind.

There is more to the living space of a tent than just the floor space. Floor space and configuration are something to be considered, but remember that we exist in three dimensions. Wall heights and ceiling heights greatly influence how much space there is inside the tent in which to move around. Curved walls cut into the space inside. If you have ever tried to get dressed inside a tent without enough interior room you will appreciate this fact. As I get older, more interior room is becoming more attractive.

In my experience, take the number of people the tent is supposed to sleep with a grain of salt. Realistically, I assume one fewer than advertised because when you are camping, you do not just take up the footprint of a person in a sleeping bag. You have your clothes, a bunch of miscellaneous small equipment like flashlights, snacks, eyeglasses, and other personal items. This is especially true if you are backpacking. It is one thing if the car is a few feet away, and you can stash stuff there, but if you are carrying everything, it has to go somewhere when you sleep.

A 2 person tent can fit two without any gear, or one person with some inside storage space. A 3 person tent can accommodate two people. The rule of “one fewer” is less critical as the tent gets larger. A 4 person, 6 person, or 8 person tent might be able to fit the number advertised easier than a 3 person tent can fit three. Also, if the tent has a vestibule this helps a great deal as not everything will need to go inside (see below).

Ventilation

In many conditions you want to be able to ventilate your tent. This is true in both hot and cold weather conditions. In hot weather, you want to have air movement to help keep things cooler. In cold weather, you want to ventilate to help avoid condensation inside the tent, which in the long run will make your sleeping area wet, and less able to keep you warm. Many tents have sections of mesh screen, either in windows or in a chimney opening at the top of the tent to provide ventilation.

Rain Fly

A rain fly is a crucial part of a good tent. It is basically a second skin, another layer of fabric that you set up over the top of your tent, providing a double wall of weather proofing. Many inexpensive tents offer a rain fly that only partially covers the tent. A partial cover means that ventilation is easier, but I would highly recommend a full rain fly if you expect to encounter wet conditions. Ideally, the fly will come all the way down the sides of the tent as well.

High-end tents sometimes are designed to be used without a fly, being single walled. The material of the tent is intended to be both breathable and weather proof. These tents are lighter, but might not be as weather resistant, especially in extreme weather conditions. Their appeal is mostly their reduced weight (see below).

Vestibule

Often the rain fly is designed to overhang the opening of a tent to form a small vestibule or porch. I have seen vestibules on some tents that are laughable in being so small as to be completely useless. A real area outside the tent opening that is protected from the weather can be critical for providing a space to take off wet boots and storing your pack and gear, under a roof, but not taking up valuable interior space.

Ground Cloth

Most tents have a built in floor. However, it is best to not rely on the floor alone to keep you dry. A ground cloth is any material that you place under the tent during set up that provides a barrier between the tent and the ground. A sheet of heavy duty plastic works well. Many tents have pre-made ground cloths you can buy. The ground cloth should be a few inches smaller in all directions than the tent floor so that it does not hang outside of the tent. If any part of the ground cloth is exposed during a rain, water runs off the tent, hits the ground cloth, and can run right under the tent, soaking you from below.

Tent Poles

The tent poles provide the skeleton for the tent, with the poles either sliding through a sleeve channel in the tent fabric or by clipping to the poles with plastic clips. The poles themselves come in fiberglass, aluminum, or carbon fiber material.

Fiberglass poles are the most inexpensive, and are not as durable as the other two. They usually are supplied with less expensive tents.

Aluminum poles are used for most quality backpacking tents. They are strong and durable, while also being light. Carbon fiber poles are super light and strong, but are not as durable as aluminum. They are included in high-end tents typically.

When the poles slide through sleeves, the structure is usually stronger and more wind resistant. Plastic clips provide for easy set up, but only provide a few points of attachment between the tent and its skeleton, which can be a problem in more extreme weather.

Weight

Weight may not be an issue if you are using your tent mostly for camping from the car, but if you backpack at all, every ounce counts. You will pay more for a lighter tent, but your will appreciate it on the trail, believe me.

There is on one perfect tent for every situation. But by knowing some of the things to consider, you can make a more informed decision. Happy camping.

Dangerous animals–Sharks

We can all hear the ominous music, building slowly, frightfully, until the climax when Jaws attacks! Movies like Jaws have burnt this fearsome group of animals into our psyche, and I think the thought lurks somewhere in our minds whenever we visit the ocean that there are really big fish out there. There are somewhere around 440 species of shark worldwide. They are an ancient group of fish, whose overall lineage dates to before the Age of Dinosaurs. Of these hundreds of species, only 4 are known to have been involved in a significant number of fatal attacks on humans. Worldwide there is an average of 4.3 fatalities per year. 

The four most dangerous species have different habits, and therefore the patterns of attacks and their danger to people are different. They are the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus), bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas), and the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier).

The great white, of Jaws fame, is a fearsome predator. Adult sharks are 12-17 feet in length. They are found along both coasts from Mexico into high latitude waters of Alaska, and along the east coast up to Hudson Bay. However, it is also known from deeper ocean waters, and new findings suggest that at least the west coast populations congregate in the open ocean between California and Hawaii for parts of the year. They are predators of marine mammals, turtles, large fish, and even whales. Humans are incidental targets.

During the hot summer of 1916, the Jersey Shore was the scene of a series of attacks that shuck the public, and was the inspiration for the book Jaws. Between July 1 and July 12, four people were killed. The great white is often blamed, but it could have also been a bull shark. Why there were so many attacks at that time is hard to say, and has not been repeated since.

The oceanic whitetip shark is actually responsible for more fatal attacks on humans than all other species combined, and it does not even frequent the coasts. It is found worldwide, and prefers warm waters and deep ocean areas. It is the unfortunate events of the twentieth century that allowed this shark to become superlative in human fatalities—it is the shark reasonable for attacks on survivors of shipwrecks and downed aircraft. During the war in the Pacific, when ships and planes were regularly shot down, many hundreds of stranded sailors were attacked and killed. Horrific stories from survivors testify to this gruesome bloodshed and led to much research by the Navy in shark repellents. Hopefully, this scale of human carnage will never occur again. And while this species is the most deadly shark, its habits make it of little concern to the average beach-goer.

The tiger shark is found worldwide in mostly equatorial waters. It prefers tropical and sub-tropical warm water, and does not get into the high latitudes like the great white. It tends to stay in deep waters that line reefs, but it does occasionally move into shallow water and channels where it might encounter people. This shark is large, commonly attaining lengths of 10-14 feet, but because of its habits encounters with humans are relatively rare.

In contrast, the bull shark is likely the most dangerous species to humans overall. It too is common in warm waters along coasts, but it also tolerates fresh water, and can migrate into rivers. They have been found far up the Amazon River in South America, and as far north in the Mississippi River as Illinois (yikes!) (Thomerson et al. 1977). These sharks are unpredictable and are often aggressive, and because of their habit of being in shallow waters are probably responsible for the majority of near-shore attacks.

However, having said all of that, the chances of being attacked are very remote. You can see the per year compared with other animals on the chart. Was that deep, ominous music I just heard?

Aquarium hoods

Unless you purchased your home aquarium as an all-in-one kit which already has one, you will likely want to look into an aquarium hood for your set up. Even if you did get one in a kit, you may be interested in upgrading to a nicer style. The hood can serve several purposes for your aquarium set up.

First, the hood provides a finished look. It encloses the top of the aquarium so that items do not accidentally fall into the tank. Very often, the hood has a light source to illuminate the aquarium, providing simulated sunlight for aquarium plants and the fish, or just providing light in order to view the tank easier.

The hood also helps to keep the water from evaporating too rapidly by keeping the top covered and not exposed to the air. A hood will also help protect the water from air-borne contaminants and dust, some of which could be harmful to the fish. Also, a closed top will keep fish from leaping to a premature death, as some species are more prone than others to jumping out of the water; the hoods helps protect them and your investment in them.

When exploring hoods, you will consider the material that it is made out of. The simplest hoods are made from clear glass or plastic and simply cover the top of the tank. There is often two pieces to the hood connected by a plastic strip that serves as a hinge so you can lift one side to feed and clean the tank. With this set up you could rest a tube light on the non-moving side of the hood, but of course the parts are exposed and it does not have a finished look.

Wooden hoods can be quite elegant and made to match many decors. Wood and water often do not get along well together, so wooden hoods need to be treated to be water resistant. Plastic hoods are most common because they are durable and inexpensive.

When selecting a hood be sure to watch that it will fit your tank. Some hoods are designed to go on aquariums from certain companies and may not fit all models of tank.

Pesky house bugs—bedbugs

“Sleep tight, and don’t let the bedbug bite,” was a common saying when I was a kid, but I did not really understand it. What was a bedbug anyway? I thankfully went through most of my life without knowing because they were largely eradicated as pests throughout the developed world. However, since the 1990s they have been on the rise.

Bedbugs are parasitic insects in the true bug order Hemiptera. Like other true bugs, they have piercing mouthparts, but unlike most other bugs, bedbugs use them to pierce you and suck your blood. While feeding, the bedbug injects its victim with an anticoagulant saliva. They can live for long periods between meals, but prefer to feed once every five to ten days.

The adult bedbugs are large enough to be easily seen. They are about 1/8 of an inch long and dark brown in color. Their bodies are rounded and flattened front to back. Younger nymphs are small and clear. Bedbugs live in large groups, usually close to their food source, and with a food source their numbers can balloon very quickly. They can be easily transported on clothing, luggage, or furniture and in this way are easily spread from place to place. Infestations can be very hard to detect and eradicate. In recent years dogs have been trained to detect infestations and can do so much faster than a human exterminator in most cases.

Signs of bedbugs include blood spots on the bedding, molted skins of the bugs themselves, clusters of droppings, and the bugs themselves hiding in mattress folds or in the box springs. There is still a stigma about infestations as many people assume that an infestation means the home is unclean, and this stigma means that infestations may not be reported. Hotels increasingly have issues as they serve many people from all over, and once infested, the travelers can carry the bugs home.

Bedbugs feed mostly at night, and they will attack any exposed skin. Bites are not felt at the time, and after feeding for about 10 minutes the bug goes back to hiding. Later, the bites might welt and itch. Sometimes they occur in a line of bites, and are often mistaken for bites from other insects like fleas or mosquitoes, or some other skin rash. This is one reason that infestations can persist for long periods without detection.

You do not have to live with bedbugs however. Getting rid of an infestation is generally not easy, and usually involves a professional exterminator. All areas where the bugs occur should be cleaned and vacuumed. Clothing and bedding should be washed to kill eggs and larva. The bugs will live on mattresses and box springs, behind headboards and in furniture, behind picture frames, and in crevices like around baseboards. Clearing up clutter around the bed is also a good idea. Getting to all the areas where the bugs could be hiding is very difficult. An exterminator will spray insecticides which should be used only as needed since they will be applied to bedding and carpets that you come in contact with too. There is evidence that the bugs are becoming resistant to common insecticides, which is a source of concern.

Be aware. Early detection helps keep infestations from becoming more difficult to deal with. These days more people understand the meaning of “don’t let the bedbugs bite” as these pesky house bugs make a comeback.
